Receiving and Weiching

The tobacco was received and weighed in a small room of the New House (Compression and Drying House). The weighing process was conducted by the balanceiro (weigher), an employee officially in charge of recording the weight and quality of the tobacco leaves or plants. It was based on this information that the sum of money due to the farmers was calculated. After being weighed, the green leaves were transported to the drying area, where the curing process started. Sometimes the weigher needed to work long hours into the night in order to closely control the whole drying process this led to the introduction of bunk beds on his working area.
