Compressing and Packing Methods

Curing complete, the leaves were compressed into bundles, packed in pinewood boxers and / or wrapped up in canvas and paper, and stored before the transformation process started. In the beginning, the bundles of compressed tobacco were just fastened with a tabuga(1) rope. In time, the several types of tobacco were compressed and kept inside wooden boxers. In 965, the tobacco bundles started to be mechanically compressed by an electric press. The nest step consisted of packing up the tobacco bundles into a wheelbarrow and transporting them to the weighing machine. After being weighed, a written account of all relevant data concerning them was made, including year, bundle number, tobacco type, tare weight and net weight.
